Traveling with CBD & Hemp

Traveling With CBD And Hemp

Traveling with CBD & Hemp can be nerve racking. Knowing the TSA Guidelines and your rights can help put your mind at ease.  As spring break approaches, many people ask, “Can I travel with my CBD?” I love vacation time, and part of the excitement is getting ready for the trip. The week before, I pick up travel-size items, get my nails or hair done, pull out the luggage, and google the weather and airline details. A   The quick answer to this is yes, you absolutely can travel safely with CBD.

How can I travel Safely With CBD?

When traveling with CBD and hemp, consider potential risks. Protect yourself by ensuring the product contains less than 0.3% THC and CBD derived from hemp plants, making it legal in all states. Carry documentation verifying its source and THC content. Access lab test results easily through QR codes on bottles or the manufacturer’s website. For our products, find lab results under the orange tab labeled “lab results” on our website, Green Wellness Life.

Are There Regulations On Traveling With CBD?

There are regulations outlined on travel by the TSA as per the TSA’s website that are very clear.  If you have concern you can always print the TSA guidelines right off their website.  See guidelines Copied Below

“Possession of marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products, including marijuana-based cannabidiol (CBD) oil, remain illegal under federal law. TSA officers must report any suspected legal violations, including possession of marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products. Products/medications that contain hemp-derived CBD are approved by the TSA and are fully federally legal as long as they were produced within the regulations defined by the law under the Agriculture Improvement Act 2018. TSA focuses on security and detecting potential threats to aviation and passengers. TSA officers do not actively search for marijuana or other illegal drugs, but if they discover any illegal substances during screening, they will refer the matter to law enforcement.

Let’s Unpack That.

That’s a lot of info to take in. Let’s break it down.

The statement, “violations of law, including possession of marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products,” refers to those marijuana-based CBD products I mentioned in my last blog with too high a THC content.

The TSA website later mentions “ legal… within the regulations defined by the law under the Agriculture Improvement Act 2018.”

What this is saying is that CBD that is in-line with the Federal 2018 Farm Bill is fully legal to travel with.

Remember, while TSA doesn’t seek CBD or marijuana, they may alert law enforcement if illegal cannabis-derived substances are discovered.

What Can I Travel With?

At the time of writing, only one product, the pharmaceutical Epidiolex, an anti-seizure drug, is FDA-approved and hemp-derived, making it safe for travel. However, most CBD products are not FDA regulated and therefore do not fall into this category. So what about those products that do not fall into the category of FDA regulated? Travel with product labels and details to prove CBD and THC content. Here is a copy from the TSA website regarding their policy. This document, along with product labels or lab results, should clarify your legal carry

My Advice:

As you travel this Spring Break with CBD, ensure it’s clearly labeled and that you possess the necessary test details to support it. While it’s highly unlikely that you’ll have any issues, knowing the law and having documentation is always a best practice. Like your mom always says – better safe than sorry!
